A Dog's Paws
When you bring a dog into your life, you have a lifelong friend. You’ll do anything and everything for your friend, including giving him the best of everything and taking care of him or her the best you can. However, no one can know all there is to know about caring for dogs – at least not in today’s day and age. Now, there are many decisions you have to make, including which vaccines to give, which food is best, how to determine what is junk food, and sorting through a bunch of conflicting information – and often misinformation from those whom you thought you could trust with your dog’s life and health.
Who We Are
A Dog’s Paws was created for pet owners to find information about caring for their best friend. While a lot of information exists on the internet, it is scattered all over the place. And no, you won’t find everything here, but we’ll do our best to get all of the pertinent information here about several topics, including vet care, vaccinations, pesticides, a healthy diet, healthy play, breeders and more.
The Information on Our Pages
All information is verified through extensive research or from trusted sources. We are not veterinarians, so none of it is medical or dietary advice. However, we will provide links to verifiable resources and sources we have used and trusted for many years. Please see our Terms and Conditions for more information.
A Dog's Paws is a Work in Progress
Because new information is always coming out, this site may look complete, but it will never be, as there is always going to be something to add to it. Check back frequently for new information. If you have information that you believe should be here, please let us know. As we said, not everyone can know everything. We will thoroughly research any new information prior to posting, so it may take several days before you see your request posted.
What You'll Find Here
You’ll find just about anything you’re looking for, including:
Medical
Our medical section is about the medical care your dog requires. It has several sub-topics, including vaccines, pesticides, at-home remedies and more. Many vets over-vaccinate. Some vaccines cause cancer in dogs. We are researching all vaccines and their consequences, so you don’t have to do it. We are not veterinarians, so always review our research and check with a trusted vet for questions.
Dog Breed Info
Before choosing a family pet, be sure to research the various breeds to ensure they will fit into your family structure. Some dogs are perfectly happy being couch potatoes, while others need jobs every day, or they could destroy your home. You should also check for the size of the breed. A large breed dog would not have enough space in a small apartment, and a breed that is very active would not fare well without a fenced-in area to run.
Diet/Nutrition
Your dog’s diet is an essential part of having a happy and healthy pet. We’ll provide information on raw feeding and commercial diets, including how to choose the best kibble for your dogs, should you decide to feed kibble. Some kibble has ingredients that are not healthy. We’ll also provide information on raw diets, such as the bones and raw food (BARF) diet and which human foods are not good for your dogs.
Veterinarians
We will only recommend veterinarians who meet our expectations. You’ll find articles about how to choose a vet and other vet-related information. Veterinarians must be open to minimal vaccinations and must not push the lepto and Lyme vaccines. We also prefer veterinarians who are familiar with raw feeding. We will also recommend holistic vets. If you want to list your veterinary practice on our site, we require you to complete a questionnaire.
Breeders
We’ll mention breeders who “do it right.” We don’t support backyard breeders. A good breeder lets you visit his or her facilities and allows you to meet the parents. They have selective breeding practices and will always take a dog back under certain circumstances. They also document their lines and never breed a dog with an illness in its lines. If you are a breeder and want to be listed on our page, we require you to complete a questionnaire.
Puppy Care
Puppies take some extra care, from early training, house training, a healthy diet not too high in protein and early veterinary care for certain vaccines. We’ll give tips on raising a well-rounded dog from a puppy and how to teach the basics, such as crate training, how to walk on a leash, appropriate food choices and more. Choosing the appropriate toys is also important so that your puppy doesn’t end up choking or swallowing something that could cause internal damage.
General Care/Training
A well-rounded and happy dog is a well-trained dog. This category covers general care, including grooming and other topics not covered under other categories. When it comes to training, at a minimum, your dog should know basic commands, such as sit, down, stay, heel and the all-important ‘leave it’ and ‘drop it,’ as these could save your dog’s life in certain situations.
Adoption/Rescue
Resuces are a hard one. They all do great work. However, many rescues push for vaccinations that are not always healthy. They also push for early spay/neuter, which is not good for the health of your puppy. We understand their reasoning behind this but do not agree with it. You’ll find articles regarding working with rescues and shelters. If you are a rescue or shelter that doesn’t require dangerous vaccines or early spay/neuter and you thoroughly vet any placement, we will be happy to list your 501(c)(3) rescue or shelter.
